Legal Education for Youth and young adults!

The Know Your Rights program at Goodwin Village is designed to empower youth and young adults with a foundational understanding of essential legal principles and their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Through interactive sessions, practical exercises, and expert-led discussions, participants will gain valuable knowledge about the legal system, civil rights, and how to navigate legal challenges. This program aims to foster informed, responsible, and engaged citizens who are equipped to advocate for themselves and their communities.

Course Objectives

  1.      Introduce participants to the basic structure and function of the legal system.

2.       Educate participants about their rights and responsibilities under the law.

3.       Provide practical knowledge about navigating common legal issues.

4.      Foster critical thinking and informed decision-making regarding legal matters.

5.       Encourage civic engagement and active participation in the community.

  • Overview of the legal system: branches of government, types of law (civil vs. criminal), and key legal institutions.

  • Overview of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

  • Introduction to criminal law: definitions, key concepts, and processes.
